High precision timing for next generation connectivity

As 5G is deployed across more areas of the UK and network infrastructure becomes increasingly important for more services and industries, highly accurate timing and synchronisation plays a critical role in network performance. To support the design and development of systems that require high positioning and timing with nanosecond accuracy, embedded computing expert Recab UK is offering the new Trimble RES 720 dual-band GNSS module for projects in the UK.

The RES 720 module offers unparalleled accuracy, with five nanosecond accuracy in normal mode of operation alongside Trimble’s standard timing features such as a time-receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (T-RAIM) algorithm, automatic self-survey and GNSS disciplining of the oscillator to provide an accurate frequency reference. These features allow the module to meet the synchronisation needs of next-generation networks such as 5G x-haul networks, smart grids, datacentres, critical Internet of Things (IoT) and industrial automation applications.

The dual-band multi-constellation GNSS receiver in the RES 720 reduces the timing error under clear skies to five nanoseconds, without requiring an external GNSS correction service. This capability, alongside the other synchronisation features of the module, meets the strict requirements of critical infrastructure and makes it an ideal choice to help operators to optimise network performance.

The low-cost, easy to use, highly accurate and reliable GPS timing source uses both L1 and L5 bands, with the higher power L5 signals providing greater bandwidth. To ensure maximum availability and security, the RES 720 features an advanced signal design that lowers the risk of interference and improves multi-path protection. It also offers automatic detection and failover with highly reliable anti-jamming and anti-spoofing capabilities.

“Precise timing and synchronisation are absolutely essential in telecommunications networks, and they only become more important as 5G sees a wider rollout,” explains Martin Frederiksen, managing director of Recab UK. “These networks need accurate time and phase synchronisation between base stations to avoid interference and traffic loss. These requirements evolve as new technologies and network architectures emerge.

“In addition, the lower latency and wider bandwidth of 5G means that more applications that have traditionally relied predominately on wired connectivity, such as industrial automation and smart grids, can feasibly go wireless. These applications require highly accurate timing synchronisation, within microsecond ranges for applications like smart grids. It’s here that the nanosecond precision of Trimble’s RES 720 is advantageous, allowing applications to meet the ever-evolving needs of networks.”

The RES 720 boasts an extended operating temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees Celsius, making it suitable for use in harsh environments.
